(001) House, Gordon (1932-2004), 'Blue', Screenprint, 1961.
Gordon House (1932-2004)
Rare artist's proof aside from the edition. Printed at the Kelpra Studio, London. Edition: 5 Image Size: 40.4 x 39.4 cm. This work is from the very first series of prints ever produced by Gordon House. It holds a particular interest in the broader history of the printmaking revolution which took place in Britain in the 1960s as the prints from this series are also the very first fine art screenprints ever produced at Kelpra. The artist wrote of this series, 'These prints were made, thanks to Chris and Rose Prater, in 1961 at Kelpra Studio, London by the screen mesh process. The simple square target image was chosen as a basic format which allowed a proportion of image to overlap when two printings were made. A neutral and a single colour were selected with view to a third overprint development directly found through the printed process. At this time after academic painting studies my ideas were formed in the direction of producing works devoid of acquired marks, complexity of motif or space illusion. These thoughts have since given way to a flood of motif possibilities from various sources along with spontaneous marks, although later results still hinge on these earlier basic restraints'. Collection: Tate Gallery, London. Reference: 'Gordon House Editions (1961-1981): A Complete Catalogue of the Graphic Works', Cat No. 1. [We are very pleased to announce that we have recently bought the studio of Gordon House which comprises an almost complete archive of every print House ever produced. Gordon House (1932-2004)
Printed at the Kelpra Studio, London. Edition: 40. Image Size: 25.5 x 51.1 cm. This work was produced for a portfolio of screenprints commissioned by the ICA in 1963. The idea for this project came from Richard Hamilton; he selected 24 artists, including Gordon House and Paolozzi, to each produce a screenprint with Chris Prater at Kelpra. The completed portfolio was then exhibited at the ICA in November 1964. Collection: Tate Gallery, London, and The British Council. Reference: 'Gordon House Editions (1961-1981): A Complete Catalogue of the Graphic Works', Cat No. 6. Gordon House (1932-2004)
Edition: 50 Image Size: 45.7 x 45.7 cm. This is one of two isolated prints that House produced in 1967 exploring the repeated image and asymmetrical layouts. They embrace 'a splatter effect used with flat colour similar to earlier stone lithographic methods of drawing as in French show posters (Lautrec/Steinlen) at the turn of the century.' Collection: Tate Gallery, London. Reference: 'Gordon House Editions (1961-1981): A Complete Catalogue of the Graphic Works', Cat No. 19. Gordon House (1932-2004)
Edition: 75 Image Size: 51 x 51 cm. The artist described how this series explored the concept of 'a matrix as a format with a divided maze in the form of continuous line to contain an asymmetric focal area'. Each print was programmed in two printings only, demanding complete result by direct approach through the printing process'. Collection: Tate Gallery, London and The British Council. Reference: 'Gordon House Editions (1961-1981): A Complete Catalogue of the Graphic Works', Cat No. 22.
